The hair stress we put ourselves through, to be beautiful, to 'fit in', to be accepted has surely enough paid its toll for me. I have to put my hand up and confess to several trips back to the Perm kit, through boredom and wanting change. Each time I stepped back, I put up with dry scalp, and expensive trips to the hairdresser.
My journey started back in 1996, it was the year of the Olympic Games and I was off to Atlanta for a month. I knew before the trip I was going to make the chop, but I wanted it done in the 'US', where hair always looks good! I was staying with my mother's long time friend Vivette, who kept asking me if I was sure I wanted to do this, at this time my permed hair was just above the shoulder.
Actually as I remember it, it was very healthy and had a cute swing. However I was adamant to cut my hair and Jada Pinkett was rocking the low natural fade, dyed blonde and that was exactly where I was heading. From July 1996 I had been perm free for 2 years, at this time I was living in Grenada and, while attended T & T carnival 1998 had strayed back to the perm kit. But it didn't last long; I went straight to the barbers at the first sign of re-growth and made the chop again.
Oh dear, I did it again, in Dec 2001 I permed again, this time I had a big Afro and wasn’t sure what to do with it. I was fed up of the braiding patterns, which only lasted 2 weeks at a time, so yes, I permed again. After three months I chopped, and have been natural since.
My natural hair is now 8 " long, and I experiment with canerow and twists more, I actually love my hair when my twists are at that greasy stage, my hair loves oil. I have to give thanks to my stylist Natalee, whom i totally trust with my hair, she is the creative mind behind my hairstyles. At this point in time i can truly say my hair is the true definition of beauty, whether i have it styled or in do do plaits to sleep with, i love every strand.
