Yvonne
Well, it has been well over 12 years since I last fried my hair.
When I look back, I wonder why I ever did it in the first place? At school I used to part my hair in two and twist cornrow the two halves.
Got my first job when I was 15 and took myself to the hairdressers with my first wages to straighten my hair. Only when the hairdresser put the relaxer in to straighten my hair............it went curly, just like Shirley Temple! I was not impressed. My hair was trying to tell me something and I was not listening! Anyway about 6 weeks later I tried again, with success, or so I thought. Anyone who tells you that it is easier to maintain your hair when it is straight, have totally missed the plot! It was a novelty for a very short spell.
I then found if I wanted my hair up, it would be lank and lifeless. I needed hair spray and gel to give it body. If I could sum up what it was like to have relaxed hair in one word, it would be GRIEF! I then decided to leave the fry and dye crew and have my hair the way nature intended. My hair had help along the way when I was expecting my two boys. Now days I wash, oil and sometimes twist my hair. When I am feeling lazy I leave it to do the wild thang!
I have even had it cropped short, though this ol hair of mine refuses to stay short for long. As a Jewellery Designer I now explore different ways of adorning natural hair.
Its our crowning glory, long live the NATURAL!
