And I Met With Fate

I once was in the south of the United States. I saw this woman.
She was powerful and wondrous. She held mystery in who she was.
My friends forewarned me of who she was. I didn’t listen.
I continued to watch for her on a daily basis. She was a foreigner and my people told me to be careful of foreigners. Again I didn’t listen.
What was strange is that she only had one eye. And around that eye she emanated power.

People were awestruck by her presence. Her authority surpassed those of all branches of government within this southern town.
She was really a foreign dignitary, with a terrible reputation. There were others like her that came before her, but I did not really pay attention to them.
Nor was I really interested in knowing who they were. But she caught my eye. It seems she took interest in my people, the black people.
As I saw her work her way towards me, I saw determination on her face. It was if she knew her own destiny but we couldn’t figure it out for ourselves.

She had a purpose and a mission. She wanted to fulfill. Other people said she was dangerous. I didn’t listen. I wanted to stay and meet her.
Other people that wanted to leave because of her reputation were either powerless to do so or fearful that her reputation would be a false alarm.
So many of us stayed. We waited for her beautiful and terrible presence. Her journey invoked fear, religious fervor, and political and economic ideas.

I was amazed by her magnificence. I wanted to be one with her - to merge with her in an intimate symbiosis. I wanted her to be mine. I gazed upon her as she came closer.
Her terrible beauty expressed rage, power, and everything within her wake was consumed. I wanted her kiss. I desired her kiss.
Then, with a power I had never felt before. She grabbed a hold of me. It was the strength I never felt from any woman in my life. I have never heard of any woman having such strength.

She grabbed with the power of a goddess and I was consumed.
I drowned in her endless and powerful presence for my body was not equipped to handle such power - the power of a deity.

Her name was hurricane Katrina.
